Of course, these places were PACKED (standing room only) so you're working your ass of nonstop all night, but you're also constantly bringing in tips, so it can be profitable. $100-200 a night, sometimes more on friday/saturday. The bartenders at the bars on campus where I went to school made a FORTUNE. Yeah, bars close at 2:00am and I usually stay up till 3-4 anyway. Can you deal with the late work hours during the school week? I also imagine the seriously drunk just turned 21 crowd might be a bit obnoxious. I always tipped in college, but I suspect the tipping there would be shittier than other drinking establishments. It's a sea of red during football season. We're 1.5-2 hours away and currently have one of the worst football teams. Originally posted by Hagbeard:First off you should be ok since they're not the assholes from Columbus. I choose to continue living, but I'd never choose to go back to working in a bar - View image here:. Outside of a bar, hawt females only flirt with me if they want to (which sadly decreases the frequency of such an occurrence) and assholes in a bar are a special brand of asshole that are not directly comparable to assholes you'd meet in your every day life.It really isn't kinda like life. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of that life shit either - View image here: -I've never dealt with anyone puking, and only rarely with someone fighting outside of a bar/restaurant environment. Except maybe the fake ID part unless you consider people who fake their skills as an allegory to fake IDs. Originally posted by Korgano:You might get some hawt females flirting with you for free drinks, but on the other hand you have to deal with people puking all over the place, people fighting, people generally being assholes, and my personal favorite, underage people whining about not being let in with a fake id. Just do your job and you'll quickly figure which individuals tip well and you can cater to them accordingly.Edit: You'll get generous people of all sorts, and there are more than enough cheap bastards from any sort of background that it's probably not worth worrying about. I've done both jobs, and there are times when, even if you have such people to handle these sorts of issues for you, sometimes you're still going to end up getting involved.I'm not sure that the way a customer dresses or their income is necessarily relevant to how they tip. But pukers, fighters, and underage whiners are all taken care of by the bouncer, at least in every bar I've been to.My only concern is a scholastic one: Can you manage staying up late & going to school? ![]() Originally posted by MacUser3of5:Korango: If he's the bartender, he won't have to deal with 90% of that. That's the bouncer's job, not the bartender's. I can stay up late, but I go into powerdown mode late at night, and am only capable of menial tasks - View image here: -Īnd my personal favorite, underage people whining about not being let in with a fake id. ![]() Good tips (drunk people tip a lot, and guess what college kids, especially in a bar, do a lot of?), hot women, usually something fun/funny going on, etc.If you can deal with the late hours, it's a great job. Oookayy.Bartending, especially in a college town, is a GREAT job. You'd be better off just punching yourself in the face a few times and calling it a day.(Not saying that you'd necessarily get assaulted, just that it would be about as fulfilling and rather faster.) Originally posted by luckyone:bartending. Downside is that you're constantly running boxes of liquor between the storeroom and the bar, which can get exhausting by the end of the night. The upside to doing that is that you're not stuck in one place and you don't deal with the patrons and your salary will probably be a little higher then the base salary of a bartender because you don't rely on tips. A barbacker is the guy who keeps the bar stacked with alcohol. Since this is what his place is like, he tends to make a pretty fair amount of money. If you don't want to deal with idiot/cheap patrons you might want to consider barbacking instead. If the bar/club is on the more upscale side of things, with a corresponding increase in age and status of the clientele then the tips tend to be better. Generally speaking, the younger crowds who are just looking for cheap drinks and cheap people to pick up won't tip that much. According to him, wrt tipping, much of it depends on the quality of the club/bar, the age and quality of the clientele and location. My best friend has been bartending for 4 years now (before that he was barbacking for 2 years), and his club takes in mostly 21+ college students and young professionals (no minors allowed).
